Tadalafil: How It Works, Daily vs As-Needed Use

What is tadalafil?

Tadalafil is an FDA-approved PDE5 inhibitor used to treat erectile dysfunction. Like sildenafil, it increases blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. Tadalafil is known for a longer duration of action compared to sildenafil.

As-needed vs daily dosing

Tadalafil can be taken as-needed (typically 30–60 minutes before activity, with effects lasting up to 36 hours for some men) or as a lower daily dose for men who prefer continuous readiness. Daily dosing is not the same medication strength as as-needed dosing — a clinician determines which approach fits your situation.

Neither approach is universally better. The right choice depends on frequency of sexual activity, side effect tolerance, and overall health.

Safety considerations

Tadalafil shares similar contraindications with other PDE5 inhibitors — most importantly, it must not be used with nitrate medications. Grapefruit juice can affect metabolism. Discuss all medications and supplements with your clinician.
