Sildenafil and Alcohol: What to Know

Moderate to heavy alcohol can impair erections even when sildenafil is in your system. Alcohol may also increase dizziness and blood-pressure effects. There is no safe “party dose” without clinician guidance — tell your prescriber how much you drink.

Why alcohol and sildenafil interact

Alcohol is a depressant that can reduce arousal, delay orgasm, and worsen erectile function on its own. Sildenafil supports erections with stimulation but does not override heavy intoxication. Together, they can increase flushing, headache, and lightheadedness because both affect blood vessels.

A glass of wine with dinner is different from a night of heavy drinking. The more alcohol, the less predictable the outcome — even if the pill “should” still work.

What men often notice

Some men take sildenafil before a date that includes alcohol and then conclude the medicine failed. In many cases, alcohol contributed as much as timing or dose. High-fat meals can also delay sildenafil absorption, compounding a late start and too much drinking.

If this happens repeatedly, that is useful information for your clinician — not a reason to double the dose without medical advice.

Safety and honest disclosure

Tell your clinician about alcohol use, blood pressure medicines, and recreational substances. Sildenafil must not be combined with nitrates. Emergency clinicians need to know if you recently took a PDE5 inhibitor.

Common questions

Some men tolerate small amounts, but alcohol still works against erections. Ask your clinician what fits your health profile.
